It vibrates as soon as a Pokémon or a Pokéstop is nearby and indicates this directly with the single multicolour LED. The Lightning can collect not only Pokémon, but also items such as Poké Balls, potions, and eggs at the press of a button. In Auto Catch mode, it even does this automatically!
